03 Jul Environmental protection and innovation in Castelsardo: the sewerage project relies on FITT Bluforce
In the picturesque village of Castelsardo, on the north-western coast of Sardinia, a strategic project led by Abbanoa SpA is taking shape. The aim is to ensure environmental protection and improve wastewater management in an area with a strong tourist vocation. The project, designed by SEA Srl and Studio Galli, with On-Technology-Soteco as the executing consortium, involves the collection and transfer of wastewater to the new treatment plant in Lu Bagnu, a hamlet of Castelsardo (Sassari).
Leading the project—originally designed with stoneware and cast iron—is the installation of more than 7,600 meters of FITT Bluforce PVC-A (PVC-HI) pipes, a targeted choice to enhance durability, efficiency, and sustainability, even in a challenging coastal context.
This result is even more significant considering that the entire pipe supply was completed in just three months—a noteworthy achievement for such a large infrastructure, allowing a faster timeline without compromising quality.
Technology serving the environment: why choose PVC-A (PVC-HI)
Initially planned with stoneware for gravity flow and cast iron for pressurized sections, the project was revised in favor of PVC-A (PVC-HI) for both sections—during execution and bidding phases respectively—upon the proposal of the awarded consortium On-Technology-Soteco. The choice of PVC-A (PVC-HI), already widely used by Abbanoa SpA*, was based on:
- Material durability
- Easier installation
- Greater resistance to corrosive agents
From coast to town: the flexibility of PVC-A (PVC-HI)
The adoption of FITT Bluforce PVC-A (PVC-HI) pipes led to improved technical performance and a simplification of installation operations. Within the town of Castelsardo, the lightness and manageability of the pipes reduced the impact on roads and residents.
The high flexibility of PVC-A (PVC-HI) allowed for optimal installation even in difficult conditions, such as narrow spaces and structural constraints. A clear example was the simple and fast installation of pipes along the winding road connecting the sea to the town center, with an extremely reduced need for bends and fittings.
In detail, the supply included 7,626 meters of FITT Bluforce pipes with diameters ranging from 355 to 630 mm, PN 10 and PN 16.
Additionally, 78 meters of FITT Bluforce RJ DN 400 PN16 pipes, with an exclusive restraint joint system, eliminated the need for bulky anchoring blocks, proving FITT pipes’ perfect adaptability to complex urban settings like Castelsardo.
Hydraulic safety and durability in high-salinity environments
The Bluforce system proved ideal for the corrosive coastal environment. The excellent anticorrosive properties of PVC-A (PVC-HI), compared to traditional materials, ensure hydraulic safety and service continuity in high-salinity zones.
These features – along with ductility and high impact resistance – make PVC-A (PVC-HI) a guarantee of long-lasting performance.
A Forward-Looking Project
The new Castelsardo sewerage system represents more than a simple infrastructure upgrade – it is a strategic decision for the future of the community and its territory, aiming to protect the coastal environment, a vital resource for the local economy.
FITT Bluforce pipes, combining high technical performance with environmental commitment, significantly contributed to the sustainability of the work.
FITT Bluforce is the first PVC-A (PVC-HI) platform in Europe to obtain the EPD® (Environmental Product Declaration) certification, which provides certified life cycle data according to ISO 14025 and EN 15804:2012+A2:2019.
FITT Bluforce pipes also allow a 19% reduction in CO₂e emissions (raw material compared to ISO 1452-2:2009 compliant product), along with greater durability, easier handling on site, and lower long-term maintenance costs.
The use of FITT Bluforce technologies is yet another example of how material innovation can yield tangible benefits for the environment and water resource management, promoting resilient and efficient infrastructure for present and future communities.
